GLA:D Hip Knee OA Program Information

What is GLA:D?
  • GLA:D is a free 7–8-week 2x/week program for individuals who have mild, moderate or severe osteoarthritis of the hip and/or knee
  • Classes are completed in person or virtually and are composed of two 90-minute education sessions and 6 weeks 2x/week 45–60-minute supervised exercise with the exercise therapists

Who Can I Refer?
  • Any individual who has mild-severe OA of the knee and hip can be referred. They need to have transportation or internet access in order to attend
  • Classes are run during business hours of 8:30am-4:30pm therefore individuals who can attend during the daytime
Who Cannot Attend The GLA:D Program?
  • Individuals who have a widespread persistent pain disorder are not appropriate for this program. Some examples being:
    • Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome
  • If the joint of concern has already been replaced, then the program is no longer appropriate. If they have another hip and/or knee with OA that has not been replaced, they are able to be referred for that joint
What Are Some Other Options For Patients?
  • If an individual cannot make it to the 7-week program, they can be referred for 1:1 exercise therapy
  • Referral to the Persistent Pain Program that has a multidisciplinary team
  • Community Physiotherapy
  • Community Rehab Line through AHS 1-833-379-0563
What Can I Expect From The Program?
  • An exercise therapist will complete a 15-minute triage appointment via phone to help assess if the program is a good fit for you
  • A 15-minute initial assessment will be booked for you to come to the Grande Prairie PCN where your vitals will be collected, 40metre walk test, 30 second chair stand test and documents signed
  • You will be booked into 2 education classes (90 minutes), 12 supervised exercise sessions (60-75minutes Tuesday/Thursday) and a post assessment (15 minutes)
  • Classes are currently run in person 2x/week for on Tuesday and Thursdays in the morning
  • Communication with your family physician is ongoing as needed and an update completed at the end of sessions
