Persistent Pain Program Group Descriptions

Mindfulness Series (2-part class)

Open to: Persistent Pain program participants. Must call to register.

Location: Grande Prairie PCN

Session Length: 1.5 hours

Description: Scientifically proven to help not only with pain response but in everyday life. This workshop introduces meditation, provides individual instruction classes, and also teaches the practical aspects and basics of a meditation practice.

Healing Arts

Open to: Persistent Pain and Primary Care Support Program participants. Must call to register.

Location: Centre for Creative Arts

Session Length: 1.5 hours

Medical Marijuana (Telehealth with Dr. Pereira)

Description: Everything you ever wanted to know about cannabis but were afraid to ask!

Opioid Education (Telehealth with Dr. Pereira)

Description: Learn about opioids and their use and misuse in persistent pain.

Pacing and Posture

Open to: Persistent Pain program participants. Must call to register.

Description: What is pacing and why is it important? Learn about proper posture and aids for sitting and sleeping.

Description: Learn about the difference between acute and persistent pain, the mechanisms of pain, and gain a better understanding of why pain becomes persistent.

Self-Management Strategies (3 class options)

Open to: Persistent Pain program participants. Must call to register. Classes can be booked as a series workshop or individually.

Session Length:  Each session is 1.5 hours

Description: Learn skills/strategies to support your journey in managing your pain;

Part 1 Self-talk: Learn how self- talk impacts our pain levels. Learn and practice strategies to change our self-talk patterns. 

Part 2 Communication: Learn different styles of communication and how to effectively communicate your pain needs and limitations. 

Part 3 Relaxation: Learn how the relaxation response can help with your persistent pain.

Sleep and Persistent Pain (2-part class)

Open to: Persistent Pain program participants. Must call to register.

Session Length: 1.5 hours

Description: Learn about the relationship between persistent pain and sleep. Gain a better understanding of your sleep, and possible ways to increase the frequency and quality of sleep.

Trigger Point Workshop (3-part class)

Open to: Persistent Pain program participants. This group requires a referral from the program's Physical Therapist.

Session Length: 1.5 hours

Description: Learn what trigger points are, how they can contribute to persistent pain and most importantly, how to release your own trigger points.

Anxiety to Calm (8-part workshop)

Open to: Public. Must call to register

Location: Grande Prairie PCN

Session Length: 2 hours

Description: This 8-week workshop will help people learn more about anxiety, develop skills to manage and reduce anxiety, and experience more calmness. Some of the people who have previously taken the workshop reported: an increased ability to do their daily work and tasks, more energy, better mental health, and increased socialization with family and friends.

Arthritis

Description: Learn about three of the most common forms of arthritis – Rheumatoid, Osteoarthritis, and Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Craving Change (4-part workshop)

Open to: Public. Must call to register.

Description: Do you crave a change to your eating habits? Saying "no" to temptation takes more than willpower.  It's about learning and practicing new ways of thinking and behaving. This 4-part workshop will provide practical change strategies that can help address problematic eating behaviors or thoughts.

Diet and Inflammation

Description: Learn about what you're eating and how it can increase or decrease the inflammatory response.

Fibromyalgia

Description: For those suffering with fibromyalgia and their friends and family. Learn more about this troubling syndrome and what you can do to manage it.

Happiness Basics (4-part workshop)

Open to: Public. Must call to register.

Description: Our workshops will teach you the skills you need to live a happier life. Our empowering Happiness Basics program will help you understand how happy people think and what they do to create happiness.

Introduction to Exercise

Open to: Public. Must call to register.

Location : Grande Prairie PCN.

Session Length: 1.5 hours

Description: This class will provide an overview of the benefits of exercise and discuss the importance of increasing your physical activity. It will review the basic elements of exercise and provide specific examples of each component. You will be guided to outline an exercise program while tailoring it to your own abilities and goals. Finally, barrier brainstorming and motivation methods will be addressed to help you successfully maintain your exercise program.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Open to: Public. No registration required.

Description: Learn about this difficult condition and the role diet and self management play.

Mediterranean Diet Lunch and Learn

Open to: Public. Must call to register.

Location: Grande Prairie PCN

Session Length: 1 hour

Description: Come and learn about the Mediterranean Diet and the many health benefits that it has to offer! If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or are just looking to eat healthier this class is for you. This class is a lunch and learn session and will include a cooking demonstration with some food samples for you to try.

Naloxone Education

Open to: Public. No registration required.

Session Length: 1 hour

Description: For opiate users and their friends and family. Learn to recognize and treat an overdose situation. After the education session, Naloxone kits are supplied to those who want one.
